Professional football player with colostomy

As a person with a colostomy procedure, I never expected to be able to make it to the NFL, but here we are. I began my football career in junior high. I was in the seventh grade, and all my friends were going to play. They asked me to try out as well, even though they knew I had very little football experience. I was surprised when I made the team; they don’t take everyone. Some of my friends who have been playing for a few years did not make it, yet I did. Thoes few friends who did not make the team were proud of me but also quite jealous. I was excited that i made the team and was looking forward to my future in football.

I fell in love with football and i knew i wanted to play in college and professional if I could make it. My life changed one day in highschool after a game. After this game I was undressing when i felt a pain in my abdomen. I told my parents about the pain i was feeling and they scheduled a doctores appointment immediately. On the day of my appointment i was kind of nervous because my stomach was still hurting. I told the doctor what was going on and he wanted to get an Xray.

Following my xray the doctor told me that i needed to get a colostomy procedure. I was devastated. I thought my football career was going to end here and now. I asked my doctor if I could still play, he told me that so long as I do not wear my bag when i play i should be alright. After my procedure I was asking countless questions regarding my new situation. I was relieved to hear i could sill play football. I made a pact with myself that no matter what i would not let this hold me back from making it to the NFL someday.

I continued to play football even after my procedure but i need to be careful. I need to ensure i do not wear my bag during games and i need to apply a custom made metla plate that keeps my stoma protected. When I got approached by a recsruter for college football i was ecstatic. I played through college with a full ride scholarship and eventually was getting scouted by some of my favorite teams. After a while i got approached by one and we set up a  contract. I told them about my situation. They were very understanding and accepting of it. They too were suprides that someone with my condition has made it this far in a rough sport like football.

Being a football player in the NFL with an ostomy is an odd situation to say the least. Any time i tell people that i have an ostomy they are surprised. I cant say i blme them either, doctors generly tell people like me to not play physical contact sports but so long as you take the proper precautions and protect yourself. I am glad to be where i am today as i can stand as an example for others like me to show that no matter what it is you can do what ever you want.

Starting an ostomy company

If I were tasked with the job of creating a company to help ostomy patients, I think this is how I would do it. I first would want to talk to the young adults and children who have ostomy bags and see what flaws their pouches in hopes of designing a new kind of bag better suited for them. Secondly, I would want to try and make it more discrete as I personally find it kind of gross how they need to be emptied. Finally, I would set up a support group in my building for anyone who is suffering from bullying or mental health regarding their ostomy pouch

As someone who does not have a need for an ostomy bag, I do not think I am the most qualified person to start up a business in this regard, but I know I would do my best to help any patients. I want to make a more comfortable bag. I would make a bag that, when it is on it does not feel like it. I would make it, so the skin side of the bag is an excellent push material infused with a soothing lotion. This would be good as it would be comfortable, and the infused cream would provide comfort to the skin under the bag. This would also protect the skin from eroding away under the pouch and help promote healthy skin.

To make the pouch more user-friendly, first, I would want to talk to the patients and tell them my vision. I would make the bag have two compartments. One big one for holding the discharge and another long shoot separated by a clip. This clip will need to be removed, so it allows the discharge to go down it and into a toilet. This would be a long piece so the bag can remain attached but still be drained in a simple way.

Finally, I would like to set up a support group that helps anyone suffering from mental instability or bullying due to the surgery they had to get to save their life. Not having an ostomy bag growing up, I would not know what it is like for them, but I have been bullied before, so I can at the least relate to them in that aspect. I am sure it is not easy growing up having an ostomy bag, especially in these times in the schools. It has been my experience, and opinion kids nowadays are nasty to one another. Some of the things they say to one another baffle me from time to time.

I believe that this is an excellent start to building up a company specifically for ostomy patients. I want to help them live a better, more comfortable life and provide a safe environment for them if they need it. With a new ostomy pouch that is created for comfort and convenience would be a significant improvement to some of their lives. The support group would be something that meets in person; the hope is they all bond and can grow together. In today’s world, people can be cruel to one another without getting to know one another. I believe that it is vital to be kind to everyone you meet regardless of what is going on in their life.

Diet After Bowel Cancer Surgery

After cancer treatment, you may realize that it is impossible to eat the same foods you have been eating before surgery. In this article, we will discuss how to start eating a balanced diet. We will also discuss what to eat when you have a stoma.

Balanced diet

Following a healthy, balanced diet plan can help you remain healthy and strong, both physically and mentally. After surgery, make sure to eat plenty of fruits and vegetables each day. You may want to add lower-fat dairy products and lean proteins to your diet plan. Sources of protein you can rely on include fish, skinless chicken, and pulses. Avoid using sugars and saturated fats. While pasta, rice, and bread are good energy sources, you may want to limit yourself to wholegrain foods.

The foods to eat will vary depending on your condition. You will also have to see what foods to eat before surgery and what to eat after the treatment.

Fiber

A fiber-rich diet can help you maintain your bowel health after surgery. This diet may include whole grains, vegetables, fruits, and pulses. Another benefit of fiber is that it keeps you feeling full. This way, you can control your appetite and weight. You will need to increase your fiber gradually and drink plenty of water to avoid bowel problems.

You have to speak to your healthcare team about the amount of fiber you can take before and after surgery. Healthy individuals need to take at least 30g of fiber every day. This rule doesn’t apply to individuals who just underwent bowel cancer surgery. Their requirements for fiber intake vary depending on their body conditions.

After cancer treatment, you may have to take low-fiber foods until your bowel recovers. You will need to get soluble fibers. Soluble fiber foods include pulses and oats. You can increase the amount of fiber in your diet over time. Your healthcare team will provide you guidance in this regard.

It is important not to add fiber instantly to your diet because it can result in bloating and stomach cramps. While adding fibrous foods, make sure to drink plenty of water to help move digested foods along your GI tract comfortably.

Colostomy diet

You can start eating a balanced diet a few days after colostomy surgery. However, you will have to be cautious about your food intake if you had diarrhea or constipation before surgery.

Whether you have constipation or diarrhea, the most crucial thing is to stay hydrated throughout the day. Drinking plenty of water will relieve constipation while doing the same during diarrhea will compensate for the fluid loss.

If you have a colostomy, the best way to eat is to divide your daily food intake into several small meals instead of a few large meals. It will help you digest your foods without any problem. You will also have to chew your foods well while eating. Be sure to cook them well to make them readily digestible.

You can discuss all of your requirements with your nutritionist. They will formulate a diet plan that will be tailor-made for your body requirements.

Things To Know About Stomas

A section of the bowel brought out through the abdominal wall is known as the stoma. It serves as an opening to evacuate your body wastes. You will have to wear an ostomy bag over the stoma to collect those waste materials.

What are the types of stoma?

There are two types of intestinal ostomies or stomas: colostomy and ileostomy.

  • A colostomy is formed by bringing a part of the large intestine through a cut in the belly. The wastes passing out of this opening are firmer compared to an ileostomy because the active part of the colon removes moisture from the stool. You will have to wear an ostomy pouch over the stoma to manage stool evacuations.
  • The second type of intestinal ostomy is an ileostomy, which is created by bringing a part of the small intestine out through a cut in the abdomen. This ostomy is also managed by wearing an ostomy pouch over the stoma. Your doctor may choose to give you an ileostomy as a part of the treatment of rectal cancer. This ostomy allows the disconnected part of the bowel to rest and heal. The waste passing out of an ileostomy is usually liquid.

Your surgeon and nurse will explain to you the reasons why you need an ileostomy. They will also tell you about the type of stoma you need and also its duration. However, you may not be able to meet a nurse if you have to undergo a stoma operation in an emergency. You will get to meet the surgical staff and nurse only when you are going for a planned surgery. Sometimes, you may not even know if you are going to end up with a stoma after bowel surgery. In such cases, the surgeon has to decide during surgery whether or not to give the patient an ostomy or stoma. Even after surgery, you will get plenty of time to speak to your nurse about how to cope with this new change in your body.

Stoma supplies

You will get the first batch of stoma supplies when you go home from the hospital. After those supplies are used up, you can get the new ones from a local chemist or order them online. Nonetheless, you will need a prescription from your doctor before you can order these supplies.

Stoma reversal

If you have a permanent stoma, you will have to live with it for life. It is not that hard as it sounds. Once you adapt to an ostomy care routine, it will become your second nature. If you have a temporary stoma, you will need to undergo another operation for its reversal. During this surgery, the surgeon will reconnect your healthy bowel with the now-healed part of the intestinal tract. After this procedure, you will be able to pass out stools like everyone else. However, you may need a bit of time before your bowel functions fully resume.

Managing your stoma

Managing your stoma can be a challenging affair if you are not fully ready. The first thing is to get mentally prepared and then remain in touch with your ostomy care nurse to know everything you need to manage your stoma.

Challenges Of An Ostomy As A Part Of Cancer Treatment

An ostomy is a surgically created opening, usually on the abdominal skin. The reason you may need an ostomy is the malfunctioning bowel or bladder due to a disease or injury. While this bladder or bowel diversion tends to be a life-saving procedure, it comes with a host of challenges. The situation can be even more challenging if you undergoing cancer treatment. However, most of these challenges can be overcome with proper information on what to do.

Because not many professionals are fully aware of ostomy problems and their solutions, you must understand your body and manage your ostomy problems the right way. This article tends to provide that information.

Ostomy-related challenges during cancer treatment

The problems occurring due to an ostomy include the ones related to your stoma, peristomal skin, and the ability of your ostomy pouch to make a seal with your abdominal skin. Complications can occur as side effects of chemotherapy, radiation, malnutrition, weight changes, and delayed wound healing.

Skin problems are more frequent compared to other complications of a stoma. if you have a high-output stoma that produces a lot of watery stomal waste, it becomes hard for an ostomy bag to remain in place. With the stomal output coming in contact, the peristomal skin can have irritation, which can become worse to cause infections. A long-term or regular interaction of the stomal output with the peristomal skin can result in dermatitis, which can be quite painful.

Stoma complications occur as a result of the weakness of core abdominal muscles. One of those complications is a parastomal hernia, which involves bulging of the bowel through weakened abdominal muscles. The bulge is usually visible in the peristomal skin. Another complication is the occurrence of sores on the stoma. These sores are known as mucositis. This condition is usually the result of chemo or radiation.

Problems related to the ability of your ostomy pouch or barrier to staying in contact with the peristomal skin can occur due to a host of reasons. The most common of those reasons is the parastomal hernia, whose resultant bulge can make it hard for an ostomy skin barrier to make a seal with the peristomal skin. Another issue is stoma retraction, which results in the stoma sinking below the abdominal skin. This situation can make it extremely difficult to attach the ostomy pouch around the stoma.

Another quite serious issue is the change in bowel habits. The too reduced or too increased stomal output is not normal. These problems are mostly related to diet, water intake, cancer treatment, and medications.

Managing ostomy problems

In most cases, you will need to change the ostomy pouch to fix the problem. You may also need to consider using some accessories to make ostomy management easier. Certain products can help maintain the health of your peristomal skin. You may consider using some products if you have irritation in this part of the skin. For more details, you can speak to your ostomy care nurse.
